Under Renovation

June 28, Day 6

Today we went to the local high school at noon to register the kids that we will be having classes with. One of our projects for this internship is that we are starting a new program with about 31 high school students using a lesson series called “Experiencing God”. We will be going to the school twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and Jennifer and I will alternate teaching the class while Evelin helps us with translating (which takes a lot more skill than most people assume, and it can be very mentally exhausting at times, so we are very blessed to have her on the team.) It was a very informal meeting. They actually didn’t have class that day because the teachers were on strike, but they were nice enough to still show up to meet us despite that. Gracie kind of gave them an overview of what the class is going to be about then she asked Evelin to share her story with them. I was a little caught off guard when she asked me to do the same. Knowing me and spontaneous speeches…that’s not exactly my biggest strength. I got a little brain scattered and I couldn’t quite put my thoughts together and verbalize them all at once. I’ll be honest, after that, my confidence level took a little dip, but something in me was shouting TRUST! TRUST! TRUST!

God’s already doing some serious reconstruction in my life, which is why I decided to entitle this entry as “Under Renovation”, because that’s exactly where I am at. It’s humbling…hard at times because I end up being very vulnerable, but that’s a good place to be. And guess what? I’m human. I’m feeling a lot like a Moses right now in the sense that I’m not quite confident in my ability to speak, but God uses him anyway right? Patience and trust…yup! I’m working on those.

The rest of the day I worked on class prep and spent some time playing hangman with Alicia and Karla. Starting next week when Jennifer gets here, I’ll be teaching a class based on a book called “Sex and the Soul of a Woman.” Yet another unexpected surprise, but that’s how God works…you just never know what He’s going to ask you to do. So I started working on my lesson outline for the first class…didn’t quite finish as much as I wanted, but I was blessed by the time I got to spend playing with the girls.

Here’s a quote from my journal for today’s entry which I thought fit very well:
“ Develop a flexible attitude, a joyful willingness to do whatever it takes…Recognize that things won’t always go your way. Flexibility is simply saying, “ Your will be done, Lord, not mine.”
